I live in the desert. By definition a desert is a place that gets less than four inches of rain annually. And here in Las Vegas that equates to over 300 days a year of crystal clear blue skies. That makes for some pretty boring landscapes.
I moved to Las Vegas from Milwaukee, WI which seems to be quite the opposite - gray featureless overcast that is even more boring than blue skies. And being a much flatter area the vast expansive landscape was not something I did very often.
For me there is nothing like menacing storm clouds gathering over a mountain range. It sends the message that regardless of how beautiful someplace is there is always trouble in paradise. Appreciate it but respect it just as well. So when storms do roll in I literally drop everything and grab the camera and find somewhere to shoot.
So how do I prepare for bad weather photography? Well, rain in the desert is quite different than the Mid-West. I do have personal rain gear in the truck but I've never used it as a full brimmed hat has been sufficient to this point. For the camera I always carry a package of Rain Sleeves. They are large plastic coverings designed to fit over my DSLR (with battery pack and handle) and a 70-200 F/2.8 lens attached. Only the lens face is exposed to the elements and the hole where my hand passes through drops below the camera keeping the rain off of the most vulnerable areas. It should be noted that I have used them more for dust than rain as I have shot a lot of desert motor sports since moving here.
These are disposable items and only cost a few bucks for a package of two. This works out nicely for me but those living in more inclement climates may want to consider something heftier and more permanent. Depending on the quality, you could spend as much as $250 for one of these.
Additionally, I keep a lint free towel in my camera bag and use it often on the front of the lens being extra careful to keep it dry as possible. The towel works out nicely for when I return to the truck to dry and clean everything that has been exposed to the elements.
With just a little planning and forethought you can be ready to tackle some pretty poor weather that you normally wouldn't think of bringing your camera out into. But the dramatic shots available at times like these not only make it worth it, they expand our artistic horizons spectacularly.
