Digital photography are happening so rapidly that even no name brand manufacturers sometimes manage to incorporate incredibly advanced features into their products.
Use the following guide to ensure that you purchase the best possible digital camera for shooting your products.
TIPS:
- Tripod. Make sure the camera you choose has a tripod screw mount. It is advisable to use a tripod when taking pictures to avoid blurred images.
- Macro setting. There is nothing more frustrating in digital photography than not having the ability to photograph things really close up, say 3 or 4 inches from the subject. Make sure your camera has this setting so you can take close-ups or the smaller items.
- Manual focus. Auto focus sometimes does not work as well as it should so it is important to be able to adjust it manually.
- White balance adjustment. Make sure the camera has a feature where you can manually select between daylight, fluorescent and incandescent so the color balances are correct according to the environment where you are taking the pictures.
- Optical zoom. This means a zoom facility where the lens moves physically in and out. You want to have this feature as digital zoom (where the lens does not move is of limited value).
- Exposure adjustment. Your camera should include this feature so that you can get precise exposure. The automatic light meter can be fooled by bright backgrounds.
- Aperture priority setting. The ability to select a small aperture (lens opening) allows you to achieve depth of field, meaning that everything will be in focus, whether it is in the foreground or background.
- USB. Port. Most cameras have these today but make sure yours does so you can link the camera to your computer! A USB cable is the quickest and easiest.
- Other features. Have a look at the memory (pixels), the battery life, whether the liquid crystal display is adequate (LCD), whether the body feels firm and comfortable in your hand, any in-camera functions such as filter effects and image overlay.
The most desirable camera will be a top-brand camera (e.g. a Canon) with a high number of megapixels (6 megapixels produces commercial-quality shots), a lens with an adapter for other commercial lenses (or perhaps a built-in zoom) and a long battery life.
If you cannot afford this camera, you can look around for a camera without the top brand name but with roughly the same features.
As long as the camera gives a reasonable LCD picture, this is adequate for most of us. Only professional photographers or serious hobbyists will demand an industrial-level LCD.
The neatness and practicality of the body is of secondary importance though doubtless buyers want a camera that look modern and sleek, and you'd want a camera that can serve you for your business and personal.
